Get to Know Fuel Delivery System (FDS) of Your Car

The fuel delivery system is an important part of your car’s engine. The main function of the FDS is to send fuel to the engine. FDS comprises the fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel filters and and the fuel tank.

The FDS makes sure to provide the fuel to the engine at a constant pressure and volume as required. In FDS various electrical and mechanical components work together. Each of these components has definite set of functions. As long as these components function properly the engine works positively. Any malfunction in any one of these or between each other will seize its operation. Now we will see those components and its work in the fuel delivery system.

  • Fuel tank: Fuel tank is part of FDS. The tank stores fuel. Normally the fuel tank is located at the rear of the car. In is front-engine vehicles, the tank is located at the rear, and in those with rear engines, the tank is located at the front.The fuel tank comprises components such as fuel filter, vent system and an outline to pump the fuel.Fuel tanks are made of molded reinforced polyethylene plastic, aluminum, pressed corrosion resistant steel, etc. To prevent splashing around the inside unit, the fuel tank is fitted with surge plates or slosh baffles.

 

  • Fuel pump: Fuel pump is comparable with the heart of the fuel delivery system of the car. The fuel pump pumps fuel from tank to the injectors. This task also includes the pressure of fuel pump. There are two types of fuel pumps: mechanical fuel pumps and electric fuel pumps. Electric fuel pumps generate higher pressure than the mechanical fuel pumps do. But in recent times mechanical fuel pumps have been improve, and are generating the equally high pressure as well.

 

  • Pressure regulator: The pressure regulator helps deliver the fuel accurately to the engine through maintaining the pressure across injectors and lines. All the time, the engine does not require the same amount of fuel. The pressure regulator makes sure to deliver the fuel to the engine at optimal pressure. After the engine consumes the required amount of fuel, the excess amount is sent back to the fuel tank through return line.

 

  • Fuel injectors: Fuel injectors are electro-mechanical devices controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU). The fuel injectors deliver the fuel to the engine’s combustion with pressure. These are manufactured with heat-treated alloy steel. The injector convers the fuel under high pressure into a vapor, and then sprays the vaporized fuel into the engine.

 

  • Filter: The filters are useful to filter the dust and dirt from the fuel before it reaches the other parts of the engine from tank.
